• It’s a single component fault — a broken thermostat, heating element, pressure relief valve, or pilot light issue — rather than a failure of the tank itself.
• The unit is still under manufacturer warranty. Many Rheem, Rinnai, Dux and Bosch systems carry warranty cover on the tank and parts for years after installation — repairing (or claiming under warranty) protects that cover.
• There’s no visible corrosion, rust-coloured water, or the tank itself leaking — those point to the tank, not a part, and a tank can’t be repaired.

When Replacement Makes More Sense

Once a system starts showing more than one of these signs, repeated repairs usually end up costing more than a new, more efficient unit:

• The system is past 10–12 years old (storage tank) or nearing 15–20 years (continuous flow) — the tank itself is wearing out, not just a part.
• Rust-coloured water, a rotten-egg smell, or visible corrosion around the tank — signs the tank lining has broken down internally.
• Rumbling or banging noises from sediment build-up hardening inside the tank, which reduces efficiency and accelerates wear.
• More than one repair call-out in the past 12 months — a pattern of failures usually means the unit is at end of life.
• Water heating taking up a growing share of your energy bill — older units lose efficiency well before they fail outright.
• The tank itself is leaking (not a fitting or valve) — this isn’t repairable and usually needs urgent replacement.
